This gives you a good idea of how massive the sand dunes are. The peak is about 750 feet above the floor of the San Luis Valley - which is 8000 feet itself. The mountains behind the dunes are part of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains rising 14,000+ feet. This photo of the dunes shows about 8 miles of width (they are about 10 miles across).
