Patriotic Barn with Flatirons - Colorado Photography
This landscape picture includes a barn in Boulder painted with the American flag, and the Flatiron Mountains in the background. The barn has been declared a historical landmark. The flag was initially painted during the Persian Gulf War; and since this photo was taken, it has been repainted along with an overall renovation.
Photographing Tip - Landmark Images
When I am keeping an eye out to take Boulder Colorado pictures, there are two kinds of scenery for which I look. First is the grand landscape with mountains, beautiful clouds, and interesting foregrounds. The second is what I would describe as a landmark photo. Especially in the Boulder area, there are numerous sites, often historical, that are popular. Thousands of photographs are taken of these sites, mostly candid snap-shots. One might ask me, “Why take a picture of that scene when everyone has their own photo?”
The challenge for me is to find an angle, a composition, a weather condition, a unique lighting, a moon rise or moon set that will enable the image to be special. Photographs like this will cause people to be reminded of their visit and say, “Hey, I have been there!”
In this image of the barn, the main thing I wanted to include was the Flatirons. It is an uncommon angle; but you could say it enhances the memory of those who saw it. In my portfolio, images like the DIA Moonrise, St. Malo Chapel, Denver City Hall, CU Campus, NCAR, and Garden of the Gods are what I consider landmark photos. Indeed, some of them are also grandiose, but it is the landmark aspect that is most attractive to the general public.
